Fire at Gulf Harbour Marina
A routine Coastguard shift at Gulf Harbour Marina turned into a community effort recently when a fire was discovered aboard a yacht.

The Coastguard crew had just finished their time on the water and were packing up for the day when a member of the public approached with a concern. He asked if we could access the pier, as he believed one of the boats may have been on fire.
The team immediately made their way to the vessel to check the situation. On arrival, we confirmed there was a fire inside the yacht’s cabin and smoke was pouring out from the hatches.
Without hesitation, we quickly sprang into action. One volunteer began setting up hoses and our fire pump to help contain the fire, while I raised the alarm and contacted the fire service.
It was a fast-moving situation, but the teamwork and assistance from marina staff made a real difference. Coastguard members worked to keep the fire contained while waiting for the fire service to arrive.

With local community members also stepping forward to help, marina staff quickly moved surrounding boats to safer berths. Their prompt actions helped protect neighbouring vessels.
When the fire service arrived, it was time to hand over the situation, sharing what we had found and the steps already taken. The Hibiscus crew remained at the marina to assist where we could as firefighters brought the situation under control.
Thankfully, no one was hurt and the fire was contained before it could spread beyond the yacht cabin. The outcome was a credit to everyone involved, from the member of the public who noticed something was wrong, to the Hibiscus crew, marina staff, local helpers and the fire crew.

Moments like this show the strength of the community. When something unexpected happens, people are quick to look out for one another and lend a hand. The response at the marina was a great example of that spirit in action.
For the Hibiscus crew, it was a reminder that even as a shift is ending, there is always the chance that help may be needed. A quick response and opportunity to work alongside other agencies helped ensure the best possible outcome.
A sincere thank you to everyone who helped during the incident. To the crew members who responded, the fire crews, marina staff, and the locals who offered their time and support - thank you.
